The Fifteenth Doctor and Belinda Chandra

from

The Robot Revolution

Doctor: And look - the main difference between humans and Missbelindachandrakind... Instead of the kidneys and the liver, all the detox is carried out here in an organ called the pasculum.
Belinda: It's like a second diaphragm.
Doctor: Exactly. The diaphragm kind of protects it like a sheath.
Belinda: Is that better or worse than humans?
Doctor: If you start deciding which body is best, you're going down a very dangerous path.

Synopsis

24th May 2008: Belinda is sitting on a park bench with Alan Budd as he is talking about the starry night sky, and about how he wants to capture it to celebrate Belinda's birthday. He hands Belinda a present - a star certificate. Alan points out the star that has been names Miss Belinda Chandra - though Belinda doesn't like the "Miss" part. Finally Alan leans in for an awkward kiss.

24th May 2025: The TARDIS materialises outside the hospital where Nurse Belinda Chandra works. The Doctor is looking for Belinda but misses her as she leaves at the end of her shift and returns to the shared house she lives at. In the middle of the night her sleep is interrupted by the house shaking. Looking out of her bedroom window she sees a rocket ship landing in the garden.

When she goes downstairs two robots crash through the kitchen wall. As one robot searches the house the other confirms the identity of Belinda Chandra and tells she will go with them. When she hesitates the robots fires at a cat. The robot tells Belinda they come from the star Missbelindachandra. Belinda is confused until the first robot returns with the Star Certificate which is ripped from its frame.

Only one neighbour seems to notice the rocket ship, and Belinda asks the neighbour - Mrs Flood - to tell Lucy at number 7 that her cat has gone to live on a farm, and to tell her parents that she is being kidnapped by robots. As the rocket ship blasts off the Doctor arrives, moments too late to save her, as Mrs Flood quickly returns to her house.

The Doctor follows the rocket ship in the TARDIS. In the rocket ship Belinda tries to tell the robots that it was actually Alan Daniel Budd that bought the certificate, and that they should go and get him. During the trip there is a time disturbance that affects both the rocket ship and the TARDIS.

On the planet Belinda she is met by People's Representative Sasha 55 and learns that the robots are in charge of the Missbenlindachandrakind in Missbelindachandraville. In the distance she can hear screams as Sasha 55 explains the robots are firing Missbelindachandrabombs at rebels. Belinda is led into a room where people are lined up to meet her, and a small robots polishes the floor in front of her as is the custom for the Queen.

Once sat in the throne the robots tell her the people will celebrate her royal wedding to the Great AI Generator. The robots tell her it demands union, and on a screen can see the star certificate, the one she also holds in her hand. When the screen shows a simulation of robotic parts melding with human form Belinda politely declines. The robots tell her she cannot decline, and as they advance Sasha 55 steps up and says the Designated Historian (the Doctor) could explain.

As the Doctor explains about the Robot Revolution where the robots took over he gives Belinda a coded message; the AI is faulty as the robots cannot hear every ninth word. Once Belinda understands the Doctor tells her rebels are going to attack. As guns fire the Doctor helps Belinda to escape as many rebels, including Sasha 55, are killed, and teleport to a rebel encampment in the North Zone.

The Doctor takes a few moments to grieve for Sasha before telling Belinda they have a world to overthrow. As the Doctor starts to talk about the Star Certificate Belinda is distracted by various people requiring medical attention and immediately steps in to help them, ignoring the Doctor. As the Doctor watches her he notices a similarity to someone has met before - Mundy Flynn (see Boom).

The Doctor tells Belinda he is here for her, despite Belinda insisting she is not important. The Doctor explains about the Star Certificate she was shown on the screen in the throne room. The AI Generator and Belinda, both have the same certificate. Not copies, but actually the same - the AI Generator's has the same tear in the corner where it was ripped from its frame. The Doctor tells Belinda whilst it has been two days for her it has been six months for him, despite both leaving Earth at the same time, due to a fracture in time. The Doctor takes Belinda's certificate for safe keeping. The robots have the same certificate, probably from the future, and if the two should ever meet - kaboom.

Some of the rebels do not trust Belinda, blaming her for the robots taking over. She begins to think they are correct and turns the small robot back on allowing the big robots to track it and find the base. She surrenders to the robots and the take her, and the Doctor, to the home of the AI Generator. The Doctor offers to take Belinda's place in the "welding", saying it'll get a much better result. The AI Generator says the Doctor, as historian, is there to witness events, not participate in them.

As Belinda approaches the AI Generator it opens to reveal Alan is in control. It wasn't AI - it was AL. Alan tells them he was taken ten long years ago - and during the time fracture Belinda had told the robots Alan was to blame and they should go and get him - which they did. Alan started the robot revolution, and when asked why the Doctor asks why she broke up with him. Thinking back Belinda realises it was because Alan was always correcting her and telling her off, and realises he has taken coercive control and has made it complete control of the planet.

The Doctor realises Alan has part interfaced with the machine, but for every ninth word his mind is free, and he has been sending a message: Help - me - same - me - pain. Alan holds out his certificate, and the Doctor passes the other certificate to Belinda. When the two certificates touch energy is released. The Doctor grabs Belinda and, as a Time Lord, absorbs the energy of the explosion, seeing her life throughout her timeline. At the same time Alan is sent back through time to become a sperm - until the small robot polishes the floor.

With Alan gone the robots return the Doctor's TARDIS. There is sill the mystery of how the robots got hold of the certificate, but Belinda insists the Doctor takes her home. Only the TARDIS has problems materialising at 24th May 2025, and the TARDIS is being repelled from Earth.
