Synopsis

Department store worker Rose Tyler, whilst trying to find the chief electrician, is trapped in the basement as various shop mannequins come to life. She is pulled to rescue by the Doctor, who helps her out of the store, before returning to destroy a transmitter. As Rose watches from outside a huge explosion destroys the store. She is still holding one of the "Auton" arms.

The Doctor, on the hunt for more Autons, visits Rose at home. The Auton arm, after supposedly being thrown in a bin, returns to Rose's flat. As the Rose is busy in the kitchen, the arm attacks first the Doctor, then Rose. The Doctor manages to break the signal with his sonic screwdriver.

After the Doctor has gone, Rose visits boyfriend Mickey's house to use his Internet connection to search for more information about the Doctor; she finds a website run by Clive, and she visits Clive whilst Mickey waits outside.

Whilst waiting, Mickey spots a moving wheelie bin. He investigates the bin, and finds his hands are stuck, before being ingested by the bin, and when Rose returns, an Auton Mickey is sitting in the car.

At a restaurant, Auton Mickey tries to steer the conversation to the Doctor, and what Rose has found out. A waiter keeps trying to offer champagne. Auton Mickey recognises the waiter as the Doctor, and the Doctor pulls off Auton Mickey's head and escapes from the restaurant with Rose.

At the back of the restaurant there appears to be no escape, except for a blue box which the Doctor enters. Rose is not keen to enter a small box with a stranger, but is soon persuaded that this is the best course of action when Auton Mickey tries to beak out of the restaurant.

Using the head the Doctor locates the source of the Auton's signal, and the TARDIS materialises near by. The Doctor tries to work out where the transmitter, which would be a large dish or ring, would be located, until Rose points out the London Eye.

Underground they find the Nestene Consciousness. Although the Doctor has a liquid that can defeat the Nestene, he would rather reason with it. Negotiations break down when the Nestene discovers the liquid and the TARDIS. Becoming suspicious, the Nestene sends the activation signal, and all around London Autons come to life.

With an Auton holding the Doctor it is Rose that comes to the rescue using her gym skills, and swings into the Auton holding the liquid, knocking if off balance into the Nestene Consciousness, killing the Nestene and the Autons' signal.

The Doctor returns Rose and the real Mickey back to the council estate, and offers Rose the opportunity to travel round the Universe. Rose is tempted, but decides to stay behind, until the Doctor mentions that the TARDIS also travels through time...
