Synopsis

Caliburn House - the fourth night - 25th November 1974 11:04pm. An empathic psychic, Emma Grayling, tries to communicate with a spirit within the house. At the same time a man, Major Alec Palmer, takes photographs as a ghost passes through Emma. They hear a knocking at the door, and the Doctor appears, looking for a ghost, with Clara.

The Doctor knows Alec is a part of the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and a specialist in espionage and sabotage, professor of psychology and ghost hunter. The Doctor is very happy to meet him, and to see all the equipment he has set up in Caliburn House. After reading the Doctor's psychic paper Alec tells Emma to relax - the Doctor and Clara are military intelligence.

The Doctor asks Alec where the ghost is. The Doctor starts to look through the house - the house that Alec has bought - for the ghost. Alec takes the Doctor to a study area where he tells the Doctor the house is around 400 years old, but the "Caliburn Ghast" is much older. He shows the Doctor and Clara some of the photographs he has taken showing a ghostly image.

In all the photographs the ghost appears the same, even though each picture is taken at a different angle. Emma says she can feel the ghost, and that the ghost knows she is there. The Doctor and Clara leave Alec and Emma to explore, and Emma suggests they go to the Music room - the heart of the house.

In the Music room the sonic screwdriver starts to play up, and Clara asks the Doctor if he, too, feels like they are being watched. The room also has a cold spot - that is considerably colder that the rest of the room. The Doctor draws a chalk circle around the spot, and as he leaves the room Clara follows, running through the circle.

Downstairs equipment begins to register, and the temperature in the house starts to drop. Emma knows the ghost is coming.

Upstairs the Doctor and Clara back against some curtains. Clara tells the Doctor that she may be a little bit terrified, but he doesn't need to hold her hand; the Doctor tells her he is not holding her hand. As they run back downstairs a strange portal appears, spinning in mid air.

The Doctor grabs a camera and starts to take pictures. In a doorway Emma sees a vision of a different world - and the ghost. As Clara and the Doctor turn to look it disappears, and Emma collapses. On a wall the words "Help me" appear for a few seconds, before disappearing with the portal.

As Clara helps Emma the Doctor and Alec go a dark room to develop the photographs. Clara talks to Emma, especially about Alec, and the Doctor talks to Alec, and about what happened after the war.

The Doctor takes the camera, grabs Clara, and heads back to the TARDIS, which Clara says doesn't like her. Inside the TARDIS the Doctor grabs an orange space suit, and the TARDIS materialises on Earth at the same location, but six billion years earlier when the planet is all molten lava.

The Doctor then takes the TARDIS to several other periods in Earth's history and takes pictures, always in the same place, including into the future, when the planet is again an inferno. It takes Clara a moment to get used to the fact that she has just witnessed whole of Earth's life-cycle, from birth to death, in such a short space of time. To the Doctor, in the TARDIS, she has never been born or has been dead for centuries.

Back at the house the Doctor presents a slideshow of all his pictures. The pictures all show a woman, Hila Tacorian, running, but at a much slower rate. For her one second is like a million years. Hila is a time traveller who has crashed inside a pocket universe around three minutes earlier. The slideshow also reveals what Hila is running from. Emma's psychic abilities act as a lantern for Hila, showing her the way home.

The Doctor rigs up some equipment, powering it from the TARDIS. He asks Emma to sit down whilst he attaches a crystal from Meteblis 3 that amplifies her powers. The Doctor fastens a harness to himself, planning to dive into the pocket universe and fetch back Hila.

In a doorway a wormhole opens. Attached by a rope the Doctor jumps through, and lands in a dimly lit forest inside a universe that is rapidly shrinking. The Doctor calls for Hila, but can hear the creature, and Hila calling for help. He finds Hila, but getting back to the exit proves difficult as he misplaces it. Emma's voice is calling him, guiding him and Hila back to the house.

Hila grabs hold of the rope and tugs it three times. Back in the proper house Clara and Alec pull back the rope, with Hila. As the Doctor prepares to go back the wormhole closes, and Clara hears the TARDIS's cloister bell. Emma is too exhausted to try opening the wormhole again, and Clara runs back to the TARDIS.

The TARDIS projects a hologram, and Clara asks the TARDIS to go into the pocket universe, which would mean death for the TARDIS. The Doctor, trapped in the pocket universe with a strange creature, is afraid. As the Doctor is pinned down the TARDIS flies in, knocking the creature away.

Back at Caliburn House there is a recognition between Hila and Emma. Emma is a distant relative of Hila's, and this may the psychic bond stronger.

It takes the Doctor a while, but he realises what the creature in the pocket universe wanted, and what it was that touched Clara back in the house. In the proper universe the Doctor realises the creature's mate is trapped in the house. He takes one more trip in to the pocket universe to reunite the two creatures.
